Project: Overgrown South

Description: The photographs in Shaun H. Kelly’s project Overgrown South consider and confront representations of the past in the South of today. Preservation, geography, and the passing of time are Kelly’s fascinations, and his images remind us that the mundane of our present moment will become the treasure of the backward-looking future. Steeped in the history of color photography of the South and explicitly influenced by the many great artists who have made images of the region, Kelly asserts that “to work as they worked, to start where they started, is no place to begin.” In an essay about the project on his website he writes, “truth is defined in relation to but not by the past.”
